Jaspal Bhatti was an Indian actor, director, producer, and television personality who is best known for his satires on the issues related to the common man in India. He is remembered for his shows on Doordarshan including Flop Show, Full Tension, and mini capsules Ulta Pulta.
Introducing stand-up comedy to Indian Television, the late satirist came into limelight with his popular TV series “Ulta Pulta,” when it was firstly aired on Doordarshan in 1989. Later in 1999, with his super-hit show “The Flop Show,” his massive fan following increased and made him India’s favourite comedian. “Mahaul Thik Hai” was his first film which was directed by him in 1999 in his native language Punjabi.
He established the foundation for his career as a comedian with street plays that he started doing during his college days.

Actor-comedian Sunil Grover  was a student of Jaspal Bhatti, and Jaspal Bhatti was impressed by Sunil’s first audition, which Sunil had given for the role of a thief. According to Sunil Grover, Jaspal Bhatti had always encouraged him to become a successful comedian. In an interview, while talking about Bhatti, Mr Grover said,
No one can take Jaspal Ji’s place, his sense of screenplay and dialogue writing, what to write and to write in precision, I think nobody could know this art better than Jaspal Ji.”
He was married to Savita Bhatti and had two offsprings, Jasraj Bhatti (son) and Raabiya Bhatti (daughter). He started a film school, “Mad Arts Jaspal Bhatti Film School,” in Mohali, Punjab, and studio-cum-training school, “Joke Factory,” which is currently handled by his son and his wife. His son is married to Surilie Gautam (sister of  Yami Gautam ). Jaspal Bhatti and Savita Bhatti were contestants in the famous Indian celebrity dance show Nach Baliye 4. Savita Bhatti actively participates on social media remembering the legend with her posts and has been honouring her late husband by organizing Jaspal Bhatti Humour Fest every year since 2016; bringing all Indian comedians together on stage. During an interview with Savita Bhatti, she said –

Jaspal Bhatti used to run Nonsense Club in Chandigarh. Through this club, Bhatti used to raise many prevalent issues in the society, such as corruption, female foeticide, and the problems faced by the common middle-class people in India. The club was later joined by late Bollywood actor Vivek Shauq. Jaspal Bhatti organized the “Grand Opening” of the club’s first show on a dried bed of Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake. During his speech Jaspal Bhatti said –
If you really want to enjoy humour then don’t let a small kid inside you grow old. I’ve never seen bureaucrats laugh in public. They do laugh! But only when their seniors cracks a joke. Classroom humour is in fact the best humour very innocent very honest we laugh without any inhibitions”
During his entire career, Jaspal Bhatti focused on various topics of society, which needed more emphasis by the government. He was definitely a head turner and when it came to gather attention, he floated different parties focusing upon different social issues with his fantastic taste in comedy. Some of the parties that he floated were “Hawala Party,” which focused on the increase in corruption rate in India, “Recession Party,” which focused on various issues like insufficiency of funds, slums, security, and reservation, he called slums “The Heritage” of our country. Jaspal Bhatti also said-
We will not divide people on the lines of caste, creed and religion but on the basis of fools and wise. We would also reserve 50 per cent seats for fools in Parliament if voted to power”
His other famous TV shows and movies in Punjabi and Hindi languages, which became immensely popular were Jijaji, Full Tension, and Nonsense Private Limited.
After he became an established comedian, he bagged many famous roles with recognized Bollywood actors, such as Salman Khan , Aamir Khan , Sanjay Dutt , Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and many more. Some popular Bollywood films in which Bhatti had worked are Mausam (2011), Fanaa (2006), Kuch Naa Kaho (2003), Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000), Kartoos (1999), Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) and Jaanam Samjha Karo (1999).
The Sardar of Satire who entertained us with his rib-tickling humour left us in tears of sorrow on 25 October 2012, Thursday. He died in a road accident, the police mentioned that the accident took place near 1:30 pm in Nakodar city, Jalandhar district. It was a farmer who had first observed the accident, and who immediately informed the local police about the accident. Remembering Jaspal Bhatti, Former Prime Minister of India (2004-2014), Dr Manmohan Singh quoted,
Not only did he contribute in his own way to reform society, but he also did it with a light and humorous touch, which endeared him to generations of viewers and audiences. Bhatti’s work using the medium of television and cinema to hold up a mirror to society and highlighting the problems of the common man will long be remembered. In his unfortunate passing away the country has lost a person who pioneered a unique perspective on probity in public life”.
Jaspal Bhatti was returning from Jalandhar after the promotion of his son’s debut, and his directorial movie ” Power Cut,”. Jaspal Bhatti, along with his manager Navnit Joshi, who was the director of Trivani Media Consultancy Services, were seated at the back seat when the car crashed and gave severe head injuries to both. For the movie “Power Cut,” Navnit Joshi handled the publicity. Jaspal Bhatti was accompanied by his son Jasraj Bhatti and Surilie Gautam who were critical and were referred to Dayanand Medical College in Ludhiana. check sources The Indian Express
