Janis Timma developed an interest in basketball during his childhood.

When he was 15 years old, he moved to Riga, Latvia’s capital city where he played for ASK Rīga youth team.
During the 2008-2009 season, he played in a few senior games too.
In the 2009-2010 season, he represented DSN Rīga and helped them win the Latvian 2nd division.
He also played for the Under-18 team in 2010 and later for the national team of Latvia.

After playing for Liepājas Lauvas in the 2011–12 season, he joined Ventspils for the 2012-2013 season and signed a multi-year deal with them on 1 August 2012.

He led them to win the 2013 Baltic Basketball League and was also adjudged as the Finals MVP award.
In the 2013 NBA Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies selected him as their last pick (60th overall).
In the 2014 season, he led them to win the Latvian League championship and was named the MVP of the playoffs.
Janis Timma signed a deal with the Latvian club VEF Rīga and played in different competitions such as the European-wide secondary league, the EuroCup, and the VTB United League.
