His mentor Dr Uma Maheshwari (former principal of Government College of Music, Thiruvaiyaru) advised him to join the music course at Madras University and also paid his course fees.
After completing his courses in music, he worked as a restaurant musician at The Carlton a hotel, in Kodaikanal.
After leaving his job at the hotel, he worked as a music teacher at the St. Peter’s International School, Kodaikanal for six years.
He left his job as a music teacher after 6 years and shifted to Madras (now Chennai) to fulfil his dream to become a music composer.
He has composed around 400 Christian audio albums.
In 1998, James became the owner and creative head of the television and film production company known as Big Deal. The company was later renamed as Miracle Entertainment.
He worked as a TV anchor on Sun TV and Star Vijay before starting his career as a music composer in the Tamil film industry in 2008.
