Some Lesser Known Facts About Jaanmoni Das
Jaanmoni spent most of her childhood at her grandmother’s home in one of the villages in Guwahati.
Born a boy, Jaanmoni loved wearing saris and doing make-up while growing up. Because of his feminine interests, his grandmother used to relate her to Brihannala (the female form Arjuna assumed during Pandavas’ exile).
According to her, she realised it very early in her life that despite being born as a boy, she had girly gestures. When she shared it with her family members, her father and both her brothers were fine with it, but her mother took time to accept her truth.
The legendary singer Bhupendra Hazarika was one of her relatives.
In childhood, she was inclined towards art and dance. She began learning different dance forms at a young age.
Initially, her father wanted her to get a job in the railways just like him. However, when he realised that she was interested in art and dance, he supported him in it.
As a classical dancer, Jaanmoni had a short stint with a travelling theatre company. Once, while she was on the sets of a play, a member of the theatre group saw her doing make-up and suggested her to take it up as a profession.
She then began assisting the make-up artist Ratul Boro, a popular name in the Assamese film industry. Later, when Ratul relocated to Delhi, Jaanmoni took over all his clients.
She began her career as a bridal makeup artist in 2006 and has since styled the looks for more than 1000 brides.

In 2010, while she was working as a make-up artist for an Assamese film, she moved to Kerala for the shoot of the film, where she received the opportunity to style the looks for Lissy Priyadarshan and her daughter for the cover shoot of a Malayalam magazine.
Although she had a good experience working in Kerala, she returned to her hometown after the project was over.
A few months later, the Malayalam film director introduced her to actress Amala Paul , who offered her work. Slowly, she became a part of the Malayalam film industry and got settled in Kerala.
She was one of the first celebrity make-up artists in Kerala.
She has worked as a makeup artist for many popular celebrities like Amala Paul, Mohanlal , Manju Warrier , Lissy Priyadarshan, Nazriya , Joyalukkas, Rajini Haridas, Abhirami, and Revathy.

An advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and representation, Jaanmoni is associated with Dhwayah Transgender Cultural and Charitable Organization, where she works to empower the LGBTQIA community.
Besides having degrees in Sattriya and Bharatanatyam, Jaanmoni is also trained in Kathak.
She has worked as a makeup artist for many Malayalam films like Colour of the Sky (2012), Run Baby Run (2012), Kalimannu (2013), How Old Are You? (2014), and Ennum Eppozhum (2015).
As of 2024, she has worked as a make-up artist in more than 36 Assamese films, 8 Malayalam films, 8 Tamil films, 4 Kannada films, and 3 Telugu films.
Other than working as a make-up artist for films, she has also worked for many reality TV shows and TV commercials.
Jaanmoni is a huge fan of Bollywood actress Sridevi. She once expressed her desire to work for Sridevi and said,
It is my dream to be her make-up artist. She has the most beautiful eyes and is very expressive. No matter how tired I am, a song featuring Sreedevi will always keep me upbeat.”
Once, during an interview, Jaanmoni expressed her desire to experience womanhood. She said,
I want to be a woman. I want to experience every bit of womanhood. I want to become a mother and experience that pain of childbirth. For which, I am undergoing hormonal treatment. My family has been extremely supportive of my desire.”
In an interview, while talking about her struggling days in Kochi, Jaanmoni said,
Initially I did not get work as I expected, so I felt guilty that I came here. It was difficult for me to even get a rented house in Kochi. Many think that people like me are bad. I was scared to go out alone because people looked at me differently; I was only 20 years old then.”
On 9 January 2016, Jaanmoni created a self-titled YouTube channel, where she uploads her makeover videos. As of 2024, she has more than 1.69K subscribers on her channel.

She is the founder of Evolve Fashion Academy, where she conducts various make-up workshops.
