Some Lesser Known Facts About Indrani Roy
Indrani Roy is an Indian cricketer who is known for being bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 10 lakhs in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction held on 13 February 2023.
She was born into a Bengali family.
She was interested in sports since childhood but was unsure if she wanted to play cricket.
When she was in class 8, one day while she was going for her tuition, she saw a female cricketer going to practice and that is when she realized that the cricket coaching centre was near her home. The next day, she went there, played cricket for the first time and developed an interest in the game.
She started playing cricket at the age of 15. She played cricket for a year but was stopped by her father because she was not scoring good grades in school. So, she quit cricket for two years. Even though she was not playing, she would often search for cricket coaching centres where girls were trained. When she found one such centre, the coach, Pachu Gopal Majhi, came to her home to convenience her father to let her play. She started playing again in class 10. In an interview, she talked about this and said,
It’s only when sir, Mr. Panchu Gopal Majhi came to my place and convinced my parents, they allowed me to play cricket. And from that day They have given everything for my cricket and I am glad that I can pay back them in my way. My mother has been a source of inspiration for me. We don’t discuss very much about my game at home but they have been my strong supporter. I am now in Kolkata for the practice. I called my family and they are very happy for me. Seems like all of the sacrifices they have made for my game is finally paying off.”
She used to play with boys who were part of the state and first-division teams which helped her improve her game a lot.
She was selected by the Bengal U-19 team in 2014 and played for them for four years and won the national championship in the 2014-15 season.
In 2017, she joined the Jharkhand Women’s team. In an interview, she said that when she was a batter in the Bengal junior team, she got a lot of opportunities to show her skills, but as a wicketkeeper, she was not able to show her talent because there were many keepers in the team, so, she changed her team from Bengal to Jharkhand. She played in Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) inter-district tournaments for Bokaro.

While playing for Jharkhand, Indrani was picked up to play in the U-23 Challenger Trophy. In 2018, she played for the India Blue cricket team, and in 2019, she played for the India C team.

In an interview, she said that she gained a lot of confidence by playing the JPL (Jharkhand Premier League) organised by the Jharkhand State Cricket Association before she played the Women’s Senior One Day Trophy.
In the 2019–20 Women’s Senior One Day Trophy, she scored her first century in a one-day match and was not out on 132 runs. In the tournament, her performance helped Jharkhand to reach the semi-final, but the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the 2020–21 season of the Senior Women’s One Day League, she scored two centuries and became the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 456 runs in eight matches.

In May 2021, she got a call to join the India women’s cricket team for their tour of England. She was in India’s squad for the one-off Test matches, Women’s One Day International (WODI) and Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) matches. However, she was not given a chance to play in the tournament. She was not selected for India’s tour of Australia in September and October 2021.
She idolises MS Dhoni and met him during a training session in Ranchi in 2020. In an interview, she talked about the advice Dhoni gave her and said,
Mahi bhai gave me valuable tips to improve my reflexes and movement in the five-metre radius. For wicketkeepers, that’s a key thing and he advised me that I should try and get better. That actually helped me. Learning a thing or two from a legend like Mahi Sir is a privilege and his advise actually helped me improve my game. Every time I hit the ground, I try to remember his tips.”

In an interview, her coach talked about her and said that Indrani was always excited and looked forward to learning new tricks.
In 2023, she played the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy for Railways against Kerala.
In 2023, she was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 10 lakhs for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) to be held in March.
