Hayley Matthews is a West Indies cricketer who has captained the West Indies team and played in different tournaments. She has played for Hobart Hurricanes, Welsh Fire, Melbourne Stars, and Mumbai Indians. She is regarded as one of the best West Indies cricketers.
She liked playing cricket since her childhood and picked up the bat at the age of 7. She used to go to the ground to watch cricket matches with her father.
She used to go to Pickwick’s home ground Kensington Oval with her brother Wayne during her childhood and ran around the ground.
She played cricket with the boy’s team of her school, People’s Cathedral Primary School and Harrison College. She also went on to captain both teams.
At the age of 9, she started playing for the Barbados under-19 team, and at the age of 12, she started playing for the Barbados senior team.
She had already played in the first division for the Pickwick cricket club by the age of 18.
She made her first ODI half-century during her debut match against Australia. She made her first ODI century on 22 September 2018 by scoring 117 runs against South Africa in Bridgetown, Barbados. She made another ODI century on 12 July 2021 by scoring 100 runs not out against Pakistan. She made an ODI century on 4 March 2022 by scoring 119 runs off 128 balls against New Zealand in the 2022 Women’s World Cup held in New Zealand, which is her highest ODI score.

She took 4 wickets for 57 runs in an ODI match against England at Leicester on 6 June 2019. She took 4 wickets for 26 runs in an ODI match against Pakistan in Karachi on 11 November 2021. She took 4 wickets for 15 runs in an ODI match against Bangladesh on 18 March 2022 in the 2022 Women’s World Cup held in New Zealand.
She played 7 matches in the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup held in England, and she made 158 runs at an average of 22.57 and took 3 wickets. She played 8 matches in the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup held in New Zealand, and she made 260 runs at an average of 32.50 and took 10 wickets.
In the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup held in India, she played a knock of 66 runs off 45 balls in the final against Australia, guiding her team to win and was awarded Man of the Match for her performance.

She made 53 runs off 31 balls in a T20I match against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. She scored 70 runs off 52 balls in a T20I match against South Africa at Tarouba. She made her maiden T20I century with a score of 107 runs off 62 balls against Ireland in Dublin on 29 May 2019. She scored 56 runs off 54 balls against New Zealand at North Sound on 6 October 2022.
She played 6 matches in the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup held in India, and she made 153 runs at an average of 25.5 and took 3 wickets. She played 5 matches in the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup held in West Indies, and she made 82 runs at an average of 16.4 and took 4 wickets. In 2022, she played in the Women’s T20 Caribbean Premier League and Women’s T10 The 6ixty tournament for the Barbados Royals team.
She was acquired by the Mumbai Indians team in the 2023 auction of the Women’s T20 Premier League (WPL) for the base price of Rs40 lakhs.
She has suffered multiple injuries at different times in her career. She injured her knee in a match against England in Bristol in the 2017 ODI World Cup. She injured her right knee while batting for Hobart Hurricanes in a WBBL match against Melbourne Stars in December 2018. She injured her shoulder while playing in a T20I match against India in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup held in West Indies.

As a Javelin thrower, she represented Barbados in many national and international competitions. She won a silver medal in the under-17 category in the 2013 CARIFTA Games, a silver medal in the under-18 category in the 2014 CARIFTA Games, and a gold medal in the under-18 category in the 2015 CARIFTA Games (Caribbean Free Trade Association). She won a bronze medal in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in Athletics held in Mexico.
In June 2022, she was appointed as the captain of the West Indies national team.
She likes playing games on PlayStation, and her favourite games are Fifa and Fortnite.
