Some Lesser Known Facts About Harpal Randhawa
Harpal Randhawa was born in a Sikh family.
He shifted to England in the 1970s
When he was 7, he started studying at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh.
His father was in the Indian army and served as a cavalry general in the 7th Light Cavalry.
Harpal’s sister, Iqrup Dhamija, is the founder of a luxury interior design firm, Iqrup Design.
His wife, Shon Randhawa, is a co-founder of Patine and Talitha, which are luxury fashion brands.
Harpal was the founder of a private equity firm, The Global Emerging Markets Group (GEM), which is an alternate investment group that has a focus on emerging markets worldwide. He was also its chairman from July 1993 to September 2023.
From October 1999 to March 2002, he was the chairman of Antfactory Limited, a London-based internet and technology investment company that he co-founded in 1999.
His son, Amer Randhawa was born 2001. He was a trained pilot and a polo player. He passed away due to a plane crash on 29 September 2023.
Harpal Randhawa was a partner in Sabre Capital Worldwide from 2002 to 2014.
Harpal worked at Dubai’s Safanad Inc. from 2010 to 2013 as a senior advisor. The firm deals with real estate and private equity investment.
GEM acquired 24% shares in a Zimbabwean mining company, RioZim, in 2012. This made him the largest shareholder and owner of the company.

Harpal Randhawa gave a talk on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak on 29 August 2019. The event was organised by the Indian embassy in Zimbabwe.
On 29 September 2023, his plane suffered from technical difficulties and exploded mid-air, resulting in the death of all six passengers including Harpal and his son Amer Randhawa.

The incident occurred when he was travelling from Harare to RioZim’s Murowa diamond mine in his single-engined Cessna 206 aircraft.
Zimbabwe’s newspaper, The Herald, reported that according to the police, the time of the crash was between 7.30 a.m. and 8 a.m. The police confirmed the deaths of all six passengers which included two Zimbabwe citizens and four foreigners, and said,
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a plane crash which occurred on September 29 between 7.30 am and 8 am, where six people are confirmed dead. The Murowa Diamond Company (RioZim)-owned white and red Zcam aircraft had left Harare for the mine at 6 am and crashed about 6 km from Mashava.”
As of 2024, GEM is worth 4 billion dollars and operates several mines in Zimbabwe including Renco Gold Mine, CAM & Motor Mine, Empress Nickel Refinery, Sperrgebiet Diamond Mine (SDM), Murowa Diamond Mine and Sengwa Coal Mine.
