Some Lesser Known Facts About Harmanpreet Singh
Harmanpreet Singh is the captain of Indian Men’s field hockey.
During his childhood, he would often help his father on the farm before going to school.
He would often drive a tractor on the farm. In an interview, he talked about the difficulty of using the rusty gear stick of the tractor which he believes helped him build the muscular strength required in the drag flicks.
He trained at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana for 3 years before getting selected for the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Academy in Jalandhar, Punjab when he was in class 10.
There, he got the opportunity to learn from penalty corner specialists, Gaganpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh.
While in the academy, he would often grab the hockey sticks of players who would leave them after their game to play under the lights.
He was bought for $51,000 by the Dabang Mumbai team in the Hockey India League in 2015.

In 2021, the Punjab Government renamed GSSS Timmowal School in Amritsar, Punjab, after him as Olympian Harmanpreet Singh GSSS Timmowal for his contribution in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
He was the second-highest goal scorer in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Harmanpreet Singh was the top scorer with 18 goals in the 2022–23 Men’s FIH Pro League.
In 2023, he was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China.

He was also the highest scorer for India with 13 goals in the 19th Asian Games, helping India win the gold.
He wanted to become a singer during his childhood and learned to play the harmonium.
Indian hockey legend Dhanraj Pillay has praised Harmanpreet’s captaincy and called him the MS Dhoni of Indian hockey because of his calmness on the field.
His performance helped his state team, Hockey Punjab, to win the 13th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship in 2023.
