Some Lesser Known Facts About Gukesh D
Gukesh D is an Indian chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, he became the third-youngest person in history to qualify for the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in March 2019. On 16 October 2022, at the age of 16, he gained popularity for becoming the youngest player ever to defeat the world champion Magnus Carlsen; he beat Carlsen in a game at the Aimchess Rapid Tournament.
He started learning chess at the age of seven in 2013. In an interview, his mother talked about his passion for chess and said,
He became crazy about chess from a very young age. The passion only grew stronger with each passing year, but not at the expense of other interests. He also follows and plays cricket, reads books (mostly biographies of sportspersons), plays badminton and table tennis, and enjoys get-togethers with friends and family during his time off from the board. He is a fussy eater at home, but eats whatever he gets while travelling for competitions.ā
In March 2018, he was given the title of International Master at Cappelle-la-Grande Open.
At the age of 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, he became the second-youngest grandmaster in history in 2019. However, when the American chess player Abhimanyu Mishra became the youngest player ever to qualify for the grandmaster title on 30 June 2021, Gukesh D became the third-youngest grandmaster in history.
His father gave up on his job to focus on Gukeshās game. In an interview, his father talked about this and said,
It was quite tough to handle my profession and his career. I took a backseat to support my son. My wife goes to work. Itās quite tough but when you get these results we are happy for all the sacrifices we have done for him.ā
In an interview, his father said that when Gukesh started playing chess, he followed R Praggnanandhaa ās style of play.
On 22 April 2024, he became the youngest-ever chess championship contender after his game with Hikaru Nakamura ended in a draw.
In December 2024, when Gukesh became the World Chess Champion, he received a cash prize of USD 1.35 million (approximately Rs. 11 Crore). He reportedly had to pay Rs. 4.67 crore in Income Tax.
He made headlines in June 2025 after he defeated the famous Chess champion Magnus Carlsen in the Norway Chess tournament. This was the first time Gukesh had defeated him.
After defeating, Magnus was seen banging the table out of frustration. When Gukesh was asked about his reaction to it, he said that it was ānormalā to react to a loss in this way, and he has also ābanged many tables in frustrationā while playing chess.
Soon after his win, Gukesh faced online hate and racism from foreign social media users who wrote remarks like Carlsen was defeated as he got distracted by the smell of curry emanating from Gukesh. This angered many Indian netizens who criticised the moderators of the Norway Chessā social media accounts for not taking any action against the commentators.
