Some Lesser Known Facts About Geetanjali Kulkarni
Geetanjali Kulkarni is an Indian film and theatre artist who has worked in many Marathi and Hindi films and plays.
Since childhood, she was fond of acting and theatre activities. Various functions and activities were held in the colony where she lived, and she was also fond of different snacks that were made on those occasions.

According to her, during childhood, she was a TV freak, and Doordarshan was her major influence. She watched many of her favourite shows such as Kathasagar, movies by Satyajeet Ray, Tamas directed by Govind Nihalani, etc on television. She considers these films as a part of her education; moreover, she grew up watching artists like Pankaj Kapur , Naseeruddin Shah , and Smita Patil on-screen that motivated her to become an actress, and she idolised their work.
According to Geetanjali, she was not good in academics and was more interested in drama and acting. Performing in theatres and stage plays fascinated her since her childhood only. After completing her college, she won a scholarship at the National School of Drama, Delhi. Earlier, her parents were not ready to send her to NSD; somehow, she managed to convince them to send her. This was the turning point in her life. She calls her years at the NSD a ârebirth.â Talking about it, she quoted,
I became a different person altogether. The teachers and the way the subjects were taught made a big impact. Even when you are just walking down a corridor, a teacher would say, wear the dupatta this way, and walk like a queen. The classmates you stay with for three years come from all over the country. I may not have got the nuskha (formula) to become a good actor, but I learnt a way of living. That was more important. I didnât realise it then, but 20 years later, it is still with me.â

Soon, she began her career with experimental Marathi plays. According to Geetanjali, she never does any TV commercials as she fears competition, and she has always gone for experimental or professional plays or movies where she can portray her art well.
She met Atul Kulkarni while she was pursuing her acting course at NSD, Delhi. They met in the year 1993, and he was one year senior to her. In an interview, she also quoted,
 He was eight years older than me and an experienced actor. Everybody seemed to be in awe of him; his talent and personality. Strangely, we have never worked together. Now I am not scared of acting opposite him, but it never happened.â
They dated each other for three years and later, got married soon after she completed her graduation in the year 1996. They have no children as they mutually decided not to have kids as it would become difficult for them to manage with their work, and their priorities would change.
She works for a non-governmental organization run by her husband, Atul Kulkarni by the name âQuest.â This NGO helps children of age group three to fourteen, in increasing their quality of education through various perspectives. She also conducts various workshops for theatre acting. In an interview, while talking about this, she said,
I feel what I have got, I must share with others. Most people donât get such education or training or go to such institutions. Atul and I met Nilesh, who was into education and working with an organisation called Gram Mangal. We started a study group in Thane, where people from different walks of life discussed educated-related issues. When Nilesh wanted to leave Gram Mangal and start something on his own, Quest was born, with its lovely space in Wada in rural Maharashtra.â
After a gap of three years, the Goshtarang initiative was launched in 2016 by NGO Quality Education Support Trust (QUEST) to make students of primary schools familiar with reading materials other than their textbooks. The programme was launched with local actors of Palghar. Geetanjali directed plays for Goshtarang and still does. She further elaborated,
We started a fellowship programme and worked with local actors to perform plays for children. Some unbelievable work has come out of it. We are preparing an audience for the future. We are trying to build on this fellowship programme, there are always challenges, mostly to do with funding. I love the work I do and with people who are on the same wavelength. How many people have that privilege? I have earned it.â

She is also the founder of Drama School, Mumbai.
She has worked in multiple movies like Court (2014) as Nutan, P Se PM Tak (2015) as Anandibai, Photograph (2019) as Rampyaari, Gullak (2019) as Mummy, Shanti Mishra, and many more. These movies have brought her success and popularity in life. According to Geetanjali, she and her husband, Atul, aim to live a minimalistic life possible. In their house, they donât have much furniture like there are no sofas, washing machine, cot etc. They sleep on the ground. They mainly work for NGO and wish to contribute to the social cause.
