Along with his brother Markand, he co-founded Shri Adhikari Brothers (SAB) Group in 1985 as a small family owned partnership firm.
His company initially produced Marathi serials before getting into film production & distribution business.
A small family-owned firm became first publicly-listed television production company when it was listed on Bombay Stock Exchange, in 1995.
Gautam directed and produced a number of films, namely Hello Inspector, Commandar, Silsila, Waqt Ki Raftar, Marshall.
He is considered as one of the pioneers of Marathi television industry.
In 1999, his name was listed in the Limca Book of Records for directing the maximum number of episodes.
In October 2017, Gautam, after a brief illness, died of heart attack at his residence in Mumbai.
