G. Sampath Kumar was investigating a fake passport case in May 2013 when he came across some evidence which pointed towards fixing and betting in the Indian Premier League (IPL).He was posted as the Superintendent of Police, Q Branch CID (Internal Security) at that time. Sampath allegedly found out that a network of bookies was doing spot fixing and betting to make illegal profits. He reportedly found that many businessmen and cricketers such as Kitty aka Utham Jain, Hotelier Vikram Agarwal, owner of Hotel Raddison Blu, his wife Vandana Agarwal, Gurunath Meiyappan and his wife Rupa, M S Dhoni
, and Suresh Raina
were also involved in fixing and betting. Later, it was alleged that Mahendra Singh Ranka, a financier, bribed Sampath with Rs 60 lakhs after which Sampath was suspended. MS Dhoni
, India's World Cup winning captain, filed a contempt of court case against Sampath and asked him to not say anything against him and the courts in the public. Dhoni filed that Sampath breached the code of ethics of the Supreme Court of India and Madras High Court. Sampath's suspension was revoked in 2018. On 15 December 2023, Sampath was given a 15 days prison sentence by Madras High Court.
