When she was 5 years old, her parents got divorced. Her mother, brought up Farah and Tabu singlehandedly.
She began her career as an actress while she was in her teens.
It was said that before making her debut in films, she was dating Shahed, her uncleâs best friend.
She has acted in various Hindi films like Naseeb Apna Apna (1986), Imaandaar (1987), âGhar Ghar Ki Kahaniâ (1988), âBaap Numbri Beta Dus Numbriâ (1990), and âBegunaahâ (1991).

Reportedly, in 1986, the Indian actor Sanjay Dutt proposed to her for marriage.
There were also rumours that she was engaged to the Indian actor Javed Jaffery .
In an interview, she shared that when she started earning well, she wore expensive clothes but always wore chappals. While sharing the reason behind it she said, that before she started shooting for her debut film, she once went to a set of a film. A man there noticed her broken slipper and made fun of her. She said that she used to keep her sandals safe in her almirah.

After her marriage, her films failed to do well at the box office, and she mainly got side roles and item songs.

Within a few years of her marriage with Vindu, she started facing problems in her married life. She even started having problems with her father-in-law Dara Singh , after which she divorced Vindu.
After her divorce and series of flop films, she became an alcoholic. She started consuming vodka daily at night.
She has appeared in a few Hindi films like âAchanakâ (1998), âBhai No. 1â (2000), âBharat Bhagya Vidhataâ (2002), âHulchulâ (2004), and âShikharâ (2005). After Shikhar, she did not work in any TV series or film.
