He grew up in Thrissur, Kerala.

During his school days, Edavela Babu actively participated in extracurricular activities and won many prizes. He received a scholarship after he won a Folk Dance competition at the 17th State School Youth Festival in 1977.
In college, he participated in many dance competitions and secured 1st place in dance from 1980 to 1983, representing Christ College, Irinjalakuda, at the Calicut University Youth Festival.

After that, Malayalam film director Sri Mohan once noticed his talent and gave him a role in the film Edavela in 1981, which became a turning point in his life.

Edavela Babu then went on to act in more than 100 films, including one Hindi film Meena Bazar in 1991.
Some of his notable films include Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal (1989), Mazhavilkoodaram (1995), Masanagudi Mannadiyar Speaking (2004), Kadal Kadannu Oru Maathukutty (2013), Monster (2022), and DNA (2024).
