Since a young age, he was a part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
In 1975, he took part in the Total Revolution movement started by Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan .
In 1977, he was appointed as the Convenor of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (A.B.V.P.) for District Sagar in Madhya Pradesh and remained in the position for 2 years.
In 1979, he became the Divisional Organising Secretary, A.B.V.P. in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
In 1982, he was appointed as the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (B.J.Y.M.) in District Sagar of Madhya Pradesh.
In 1987, he was appointed as convenor of a Hindu nationalist militant organisation known as the Bajrang Dal for District Sagar in Madhya Pradesh.
In 1996, he became a member of the Standing Committee on Labour and Welfare.

In July 2021, he became a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Dr. Virendra Kumar actively works for the upliftment of Gau-Seva Sangh Sanstha, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. He has also worked for many other social causes including the development of orphanages, Deaf and Dumb schools, and old age homes.

He has been an athlete and has won various accolades in race events at the State level.
