Some Lesser Known Facts About Dinesh Singh Rana
Dinesh Singh Rana was commissioned into the 10th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on 19 December 1987 and later commanded the same battalion during his career.
He studied at the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla and completed higher military education at institutions in Wellington, New Delhi, Madrid, and the National Defence University in the USA.
He served in operational missions with the Indian Military Training Team and with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon during his early and mid-level postings.
He commanded an Infantry Brigade and a Division in the Eastern Sector, and later led the Gajraj Corps along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
He worked as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, College of Defence Management, Secunderabad, and Higher Command Wing at Army War College, Mhow.
He has served as Brigade Major of an Armoured Brigade, Deputy Director General Staff Duties, Brigadier Military Intelligence (East), Provost Marshal, and Director General Staff Duties.

He was awarded the Sena Medal and COAS Commendation early in his career for service in Kashmir and later received Yudh Seva Medal, AVSM, and PVSM.
He also holds a Ph.D. in China’s defence modernisation.
On 1 June 2025, he took charge as the 18th Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), India’s only tri-service command located at Sri Vijaya Puram.

Before becoming CINCAN, he served as Director General of the Defence Intelligence Agency and became the first from that post to be promoted as a Commander-in-Chief.
