Political Journey • From 1979 to 1983, he was a member of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) at Ranchi University.
• Later, he became an office-bearer of the Congress party in the Lohardaga district. He then went on to become a member of the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee.
• In May 2009, he lost the Lok Sabha election from the Chatra constituency in Jharkhand that he contested on a ticket of the Indian National Congress.
• In June 2009, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in a by-election. The seat to which he was elected was earlier held by Digvijay Singh, an Indian politician from the state of Bihar.

Controversy Cash seizure by the IT department
On 6 December 2023, Dhiraj Prasad Sahu came under the radar of the Income Tax department after it launched marathon raids against Boudh Distillery Private Limited, an Odisha-based distillery company, and its promoters for alleged tax evasion and hoarding of unaccounted money. Dhiraj Prasad Sahu owns the distillery along with his family. In the week-long raids, cash worth Rs. 351 crore was discovered at Sahu's Ranchi home. Raids were also carried out at other properties owned by Sahu in various areas such as Sabalpur, Bolangir, Titilagarh, Boudh, Sudargarh, Rourkela, and Bhubaneswar. Later, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh issued a statement on the matter. He said,

"The Indian National Congress is in no way connected with the businesses of Dheeraj Sahu, MP. Only he can explain, and should explain, how huge amounts of cash have been reportedly unearthed by the Income Tax authorities from his properties."

Dhiraj was accused by other BJP members of abusing his position of authority and his close association with Rahul Gandhi
. Former BJP State President and Rajya Sabha member Deepak Prakash released a statement. He said,

"This corruption cannot happen without the support of the JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) government running the state. Congress and corruption have a close relationship. Whenever Congress has come to power, whether it is at the Centre or in State, rampant corruption has taken place. Dhiraj Sahu has a close relationship with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi."

While the legal proceedings were still ongoing, Dhiraj Prasad Sahu's old tweet from August 2022 went viral on social media in which he shared his opinion about black money's continued presence in the nation even after the demonetisation in 2016.
