Some Lesser Known Facts About Dhiraj Bommadevara
As a child, Dhiraj Bommadevara started liking archery as a sport after listening to the stories from the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata at his home.
When he was 5 years old, Dhiraj Bommadevara’s father gifted him his first bow and arrow.
As he grew up, his love for archery also grew, but his family faced financial struggles.
His father began working as a technical official in the Archery Association of India for a salary of around Rs. 5000 after the school he worked at shut down.
Dhiraj Bommadevara’s father then mortgaged his mother’s mangal sutra to a bank to get a loan to buy archery equipment for Dhiraj. His father told him that this was the last thing he could do for Dhiraj.
His father advised him that he had to choose between pursuing archery or continuing his studies and left the decision to him. Once, in a media conversation, he remembered that he thought that he would leave archery at that time. He said,
I thought that I would leave archery. I was damaged by myself. I was so broken that I couldn’t do anything. I came to think like that.”
However, he chose to pursue archery and enrolled at the Cherukuri Volga Archery Academy in Vijayawada. He took training there from 2006 to 2018.

After observing his performance in archery, the Olympic Gold Quest, a program of the Foundation for Promotion of Sports and Games, started supporting Dhiraj Bommadevara in his sports expenses.
He joined the Indian Army in 2021 as a Havaldar after receiving professional training in archery at the Army Sports Institute in Pune for four years.
In 2021, Dhiraj Bommadevara participated in the junior men’s team in the World Youth Championships organised in Wraclow and won a gold medal.
He was selected to represent India at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. He competed in the Indian men’s recurve team with archers Atanu Das and Tushar Shelke and won a silver medal. They lost the final to the Republic of Korea.

In January 2022, Dhiraj Bommadevara defeated Tarundeep Rai , a Tokyo Olympian, in a Ranking tournament organised in Hyderabad.
In 2023, he represented India at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany. He competed in the men’s team, individual, and mixed team events.
On 3 October 2023, Dhiraj Bommadevara faced a setback in the quarter-final of the individual event at the Asian Games against his opponent Abdullin. He blamed himself for a “technical fault” that caused him to miss the target twice, which led to his quarterfinal defeat.
After that, in a media conversation, he said that he faced a lot of online abuse for his performance at the 2023 Asian Games, which left him “emotionally damaged.”
In 2023, Dhiraj Bommadevara participated in the men’s individual and mixed team events in the recurve category at the World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
