Some Lesser Known Facts About Denis Mukwege
Denis was born into a middle-class religious family of 11 members.
In his childhood, he used to visit sick people with his pastor father, which inspired him to become a doctor.
After completing his degree in medicine in Burundi, he started practising at a Christian Hospital in Lemera, South Kivu.
While working as a paediatrician, he saw various cases where women were suffering from pain and complications after birth, which inspired him to travel to France to study gynaecology and obstetrics.
In 1999, he founded the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu; with an aim to cure survivors of Congo’s epidemic of sexual violence.

In 2012, in an address at the UN, he said-
“deafening silence and lack of courage of the international community.”
On 25 October 2012, he faced the repercussions for raising his voice at the UN; as 4 armed men took two of his daughters’ as a hostage and even fired bullets at him. Though his security guard was killed, he escaped an assassination attempt. Post this incidence, he, along with his family, flew to Sweden and then Brussels, where they lived in exile for 3 months; until the women of Bukavu pleaded for him to return, which he accepted.
In 2015, a documentary on his life titled “The Man Who Mends Women: The Wrath of Hippocrates” was released.

So far, he has treated more than 50,000 women and is still counting on.
In October 2018, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in treating and fighting for the victims of sexual violence in Congo. He shared the prize with Iraqi activist Nadia Murad .
