In 1961, he joined the Carlton Club in Coburg where his father used to play.
He hit 19,188 runs including 55 centuries, 88 half-centuries and scored 324 runs not out (average of 51.85) in first-class matches.
From 1984 to 1992, he played 52 test matches for Australia where he scored 3,631 runs with 11 centuries, at an average of 46.55.Â
In the 1987 World Cup, he scored 314 runs with 3 half-centuries at an average of 44, to help his team win the cup.Â
He played 164 ODIs with 6068 runs, 7 centuries, 46 half centuries (average run rate of 44.61).
