Some Lesser Known Facts About David Willey
While growing up, David Willey idolised his father and wanted to follow in his footsteps.
In an interview, he revealed that his academy coach once told him that he was not good enough to play professional cricket following which he worked very hard to prove him wrong.

He started playing professional cricket for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and played his first game against Leicestershire, one of the clubs his father played for, in 2009.
Initially, he was a lower-order batsman who could swing the new ball.
David was dismissed for a golden duck while executing a poor shot against Essex in his first One Day game.
He took his first wicket in the form of Phil Edwards when he bowled him LBW out in his second first-class match.
In 2010, Willey appeared in Brain vs Brawn, a Cricket AM feature, along with his Northants teammate Jack Brooks.
In 2012, he made an impressive performance by taking 43 wickets for Northamptonshire in the Friends Life T20 competition.

Later, he was inducted into the England Lions team; however, he could not make it into England’s squad for the 2015 World Cup in Australia due to an injury.

After recovering from his injury, he made a successful return to his home county in 2014.
After making his ODI debut against Ireland in May 2015, he scored a century for his home county, Northamptonshire, against Sussex in the Natwest T20 Blast.
In the same year, he moved to Leeds, where he started playing for Yorkshire in all three formats of the game.
In the 2015-16 BBL season, he played for Perth Scorchers; he was the only overseas player for the club in the 2017-18 season.
He made an impressive performance in the 2016 T20I World Cup in India, which led England to the finals; however, England lost to West Indies in the finals.

In 2017, there was a dip in his performance, especially in ODIs, and he was no longer a member of England’s regular squad in 2018.
In 2018, he made his IPL debut for Chennai Superkings; he replaced an injured Kedar Jadhav in the tournament.
He was not included in England’s squad for the 2019 World Cup.
In 2021, he played as a captain for Northern Superchargers in the first edition of The Hundred tournament.
On 11 November 2023, he took 3 wickets for 56 runs from his 10 overs in his last ODI against Pakistan.
He got married to former X Factor contestant Carolynne Good in an intimate ritual in Leeds in November 2016. Carolynne and David first met at a stadium, where Carolynne visited to watch a match of her friend Jonny Bairstow .
Along with Moeen Ali, David prevented an embarrassing loss against Afghanistan. It was a 57-run standoff, which helped him cement his position as an opener.
On 19 December 2023, David was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs. 2 crore in the 2024 IPL auction, held at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai; however, he remained unavailable in the tournament, citing personal reasons.
