In February 2022, the Indian TV channel Zee News conducted a sting operation in which he revealed information about former Indian captain Virat Kohli
and the fitness of Indian players which caused a huge controversy among Indian cricket fans. He said that Kohli had an ego clash with the former Chairman of BCCI and former captain of India, Sourav Ganguly
and tried to defame Ganguly by leaking the information of his removal from captaincy as he believed that Ganguly was responsible for his removal. He claimed that Kohli started to believe that he is bigger than the game. Sharma also alleged that many Indian players are 80-85% fit and take injections to get 100% fit for the matches. He also revealed the internal conversations with Indian coach Rahul Dravid
and other players and said that he had differences of the opinion with the team management regarding fitness of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah
. He also claimed that Hardik Pandya
is the future of Indian cricket and he brought various players like Suryakumar Yadav
and Shubman Gill
. His comments caused a frenzy among the fans who criticised him for leaking such information which could bring shame to the players, team, and the game of cricket. BCCI launched an investigation into the matter as chief selector is not allowed to talk to media about team matters. On 17 February 2023, he voluntarily submitted his resignation which was accepted by the secretary of BCCI, Jay Shah. A top BCCI official said that team, players, and BCCI had lost trust in him after the video surfaced. He said, "Yes, Chetan has tendered his resignation to BCCI secretary Jay Shah and his resignation has been accepted. His position had become untenable after the sting operation. He resigned voluntarily and wasn’t asked to resign. Coach Rahul Dravid, captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have completely lost faith in him. He couldn’t have possibly sat across the table along with them for selection committee meetings as he had lost all respect. He paid the price for being a big mouth."

According to him, that shot depressed him and crushed his self-confidence. Chetan said that he tries to forget that match; however, everyone who meets him asks this question. He said,

Whoever meets me for the first time, the first question that comes is about the last-ball six that Javed Miandad hit me for. It keeps happening. I have even started enjoying it now. Even when I am on the air doing commentary, I am reminded of the same as if it had happened recently. This keeps happening. I want to forget but people don’t let me do it as they keep asking. So, I am left with little choice. I tried my best to york Miandad and not give a loose delivery but it turned out to be a full toss. Javed was the best batsman and he hit it over the boundary. Badnaami main bhi naam hai (So what if you are infamous, you are still famous). God chose to make me famous like this, then I have no option. I don’t get irritated any more with the questions. check sources DNA India
