Some Lesser Known Facts About C. P. Radhakrishnan
C. P. Radhakrishnan joined organizations like the RSS and the Jan Sangh when he was 16 years old.
During his college days, he was a table tennis player and a skilled long-distance runner in athletics.
After completing his formal education, he manufactured briefs and vests and sold them under his brand, “SPICE” in India.
He then became the first exporter from Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, to introduce cotton knitted fabric to Bangladesh. He expanded his fabric business in Bangladesh and other countries from 1985 to 1998.
C. P. Radhakrishnan served as a member of the Lok Sabha twice. He contested as a BJP candidate in the 1998 and 1999 general elections, after the 1998 Coimbatore bombings.
He won the 1998 election by more than 150,000 votes and the 1999 election by 55,000 votes.
From 1998 to 2004, he served as a member of the Parliamentary Committee for Public Sector Undertakings (PSU). During this period, he was a member of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for Finance.
In 1999, he mentioned in one of his speeches that voters in Coimbatore were ready to support the BJP.

On 20 October 2003, he addressed the 58th session of the UN General Assembly. He spoke about improving coordination of the United Nations’ humanitarian and disaster relief efforts.
He was one of the state leaders who formed alliances in 2004 after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) ended its partnership with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
In 2004, he stated in his political speeches that the BJP did not betray any party or damage relations with its allies.
He worked with the BJP state unit to build connections with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for the 2004 elections.

He participated in a parliamentary delegation to the United Nations in 2004.
He served as the state president of BJP Tamil Nadu from 2004 to 2007.
As president, he led a 93-day “rath yatra” (chariot journey) to promote the linking of Indian rivers, fight against untouchability, and campaign against terrorism. He covered all constituencies in Tamil Nadu during this journey.
In 2014, he contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Coimbatore Constituency as a BJP candidate. He did not have the support of major Tamil Nadu parties, DMK and AIADMK, but he got second place with over 389,000 votes, the highest for a BJP candidate in Tamil Nadu.
In 2014, he was a member of the first parliamentary delegation to Taiwan, representing the Government of India.
He served as the chairman of the All India Coir Board under the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises from 2016 to 2020.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was re-elected as the BJP candidate for Coimbatore Constituency.
In 2020, he was appointed as the In-charge of BJP in Kerala. He served in the position till 2022.
Later, he was appointed as a National Executive Member of the BJP.
He is often referred to as the “Modi of Tamil Nadu.”

On 12 February 2023, he was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand. He began his term on 8 February 2023, succeeding Ramesh Bais.
On 19 March 2024, after Tamilisai Soundararajan’s resignation, he was given additional responsibilities as the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

On 27 July 2024, when he was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra, Jishnu Dev Varma, Santosh Gangwar, and Kuniyil Kailashnathan took over as the Governor of Telangana, Governor of Jharkhand, and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

He likes playing table tennis, cricket, and volleyball in his free time.
During his doctorate studies, he conducted research in political science and communism on the topic “Fall of Communism.”
He has completed two long “Path Patras.” A 280 km walk from Madurai to Kambam over 14 days to raise awareness for the Mullai Periyar Dam, and a 230 km walk from Kudiyatham in Tamil Nadu to Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh over 11 days to save the Palar river.
He enjoys travelling to distant places in his free time, with the USA, UK, France, and Germany being some of his favourite destinations.
On 9 September 2025, Radhakrishnan was elected as India’s 15th Vice President, defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy. Radhakrishnan became the third leader from Tamil Nadu to hold the post.
