Her mother has English and Irish roots, and her father is African American.
When Brittany Howard was a child, her family lived in a junkyard, which once caught fire after being struck by lightning.
She learnt to write poetry and play the piano from her elder sister, Jaime, who passed away in 1998 from a rare eye cancer called retinoblastoma.

She practised with Alabama Shakes, an American rock band, whenever she had time.
Sometimes, Brittany Howard worked 13 hours at the post office and then rushed to the band for rehearsal.
Later, she became a full-time musician and the lead singer and guitarist of the Alabama Shakes.

The band started as The Shakes with Howard and bassist Zac Cockrell. After that, drummer Steve Johnson joined them, and later, guitarist Heath Fogg completed the group.
They performed in local bars in Alabama. They signed with ATO Records and released their first album, Boys & Girls, in 2012. The album was a hit and got several Grammy nominations.
When she was 25 years old, she came out as a lesbian.
In April 2015, Alabama Shakes released their second music album called Sound and Colour. The album became number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
After that, the band started performing on popular television shows such as Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
