| Notable Judgement(s) | Prashant Bhushan Contempt Case (2020): Justice BR Gavai was part of the Supreme Court bench that found senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan guilty of criminal contempt. The case was based on two tweets by Bhushan - one criticised the Chief Justice for riding a motorcycle during the pandemic, and the other said the Supreme Court had weekened democracy in the past six years. The Court said these tweets damaged the image of the judiciary. Bhushan was fined Rs. 1 and warned of jail time and a 3-year ban from practicing law if he did not pay. Demonetisation Case (2023): Justice BR Gavai delivered the main judgement in a five-judge bench that supported the government's 2016 decision to ban Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes. He said that the government had discussed the move with the RBI, had the legal power to cancel all notes of a certain value, and that the decision was fair and balanced under the law. Article 370 Verdict (2023): Justice Gavai was part of the five-judge Constitution Bench who gave the final decision on the removal of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. In December 2023, the Court ruled that the government's move was constitutional and legally valid. The bench also upheld the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019, which split the former state into two Union Territories - Jammu & Kashmir (with a legislature) and Ladakh (without a legislature). Justice Gavai agreed that the government had followed the correct constitutional process for both the abolition and the reorganisation. |

Some Lesser Known Facts About BR Gavai
BR Gavai enrolled as an advocate on 16 March 1985.
Gavai later began his practice under the mentorship of Barrister Raja S. Bhonsale, who had served as both Advocate General and a Judge of the High Court, and continued till 1987.
Gavai began practising independently at the Bombay High Court in 1987 and continued until 1990.
Later, Gavai primarily practised at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court, focusing on constitutional and administrative law. He also often represented organisations like SICOM, DCVL, and various municipal councils in Vidarbha before the court.
BR Gavai served as the Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court from August 1992 to July 1993.
He was appointed as the Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on 17 January 2000.
Gavai became an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 14 November 2003 and a permanent Judge on 12 November 2005.
