Some Lesser Known Facts About Bobby Mukkamala
In the early 1970s, his parents moved from Andhra Pradesh, India, to Flint, Michigan, United States. They came to the United States to practise medicine.
As a child, Bobby Mukkamala used to play on the grounds of Hurley Medical Centre, where his mother, Sumathi Mukkamala, worked as a doctor.
His immigrant physician parents inspired him to choose a career in medicine. Once, during a media conversation, he shared his inspiration to pursue a medical career. He said,
My parents moved to this country with their medical education and not much else. I chose to go into medicine to expand on their success by going back to my hometown of Flint and serving the community that welcomed them decades ago.”
In 1997, Bobby Mukkamala became a Diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery).
In 2000, he began practising as an Otolaryngologist, i.e. a Head and Neck Surgeon in his hometown of Flint, Michigan.
In 2009, Bobby Mukkamala was elected to the American Medical Association (AMA) Council on Science and Public Health.
He played an important role during the Flint water crisis from 2014 to 2019. During this time, he served as chairman of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, where he focused on helping children affected by lead exposure.

In 2016, Bobby Mukkamala was appointed as the chairman of the AMA Council. He served in the position till 2017.
In 2017, he was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees and again in 2021.
Bobby Mukkamala was diagnosed with an 8-centimeter brain tumour in November 2024. Three weeks later, He had surgery and 90% of the tumour was removed.
He has spent many years as an advocate for patients in organised medicine.
In June 2025, Bobby Mukkamala was appointed as the 180th president of the American Medical Association (AMA).
He became the first doctor of Indian origin to lead the organisation.
Bobby Mukkamala has been associated with the American Medical Association (AMA) since his residency.

Bobby Mukkamala has served as the chairman of the Young Physicians Section at the Michigan State Medical Society.
At the Genesee County Medical Society, he served as its president. He works as its Board of Directors and a member of the Legislative Liaison Committee. He also serves as its Chairman of the Committee on Membership.
Bobby Mukkamala serves as a representative to the Great Lakes Caucus. Â
At McLaren Regional Medical Centre, he serves as a member of the Surgical Quality Assurance Committee and the Surgical Invasive Procedures Committee. He also serves as the chairman of the Bylaws Committee and Medical Director of the Vestibular Rehabilitation Centre.
