Some Lesser Known Facts About Bob Saget
Bob Saget was an American comedian, television host, and actor who was best known for playing the role of âDanny Tannerâ in ABCâs sitcom Full House (1987-1995), and its Netflix sequel Fuller House (2016-2020). He was also popular for his adult-oriented stand-up comedy.
His family relocated to Norfolk, Virginia, when Saget was a few years old.

He grew up in Norfolk but had his bar mitzvah (coming-of-age ritual) in Philadelphia at the age of 13 as he had very less family members in Virginia.
Subsequently, Saget shifted to Encino near Los Angeles along with his family for sometime.
After a few years, he again relocated to Philadelphia.
Saget was one of the meritorious students at the School of Theater, Film, and Media Arts, Temple University, Philadelphia. While in the institution, he made a student film named Through Adamâs Eyes (1977), a black and white film about a boy who received reconstructive facial surgery. He received an award of merit at the Student Academy Awards for the film.
At that time, he often visited the comedy clubs The Improv and Catch a Rising Star in New York City. There, he used to play âWhile My Guitar Gently Weepsâ and made his guitar appear to weep by throwing water on it through his water bottle.
He also enrolled in a course at the University of Southern California but quit shortly after.

Saget had a sister Gay Saget who died from scleroderma, a group of rare diseases that involve the hardening and tightening of the skin, in 1993.
His other sister Andrea Saget died of a disease called Aneurysm when she was 32 years old. An aneurysm is a disease in which there is an enlargement of an artery which is caused by weakness in the arterial wall.
He lost his father on January 30, 2007, who died of complications from congestive heart failure at the age of 90.
Bob started his career as a comedian in early 1987 by doing a comedy stint on CBSâs The Morning Program.
In the same year, he appeared in the American sitcom âFull Houseâ as Danny Tanner, a widowed father. His role became immensely popular among the family viewers and booked a place for itself in the Nielsen ratingsâ Top 30.

The following year, he appeared in the comedy film âHalf Bakedâ (1998). He played a cameo of a drug addict in the film.
After the success of his role as Danny Tanner, many acting offers (for the role of a father) started pouring in and Bob again played a widowed dad in the American sitcom âRaising Dadâ (2001). The show was aired on the WB Television Network.
In 2007, he dedicated his HBO comedy special âThat Ainât Rightâ to his father, Ben Saget, and released a DVD of it.
Later, he appeared in four episodes of the HBO TV series Entourage (2005-10).
Subsequently, he appeared in the sitcom âSurviving Suburbiaâ (2009).
Bob did a cameo in two episodes of the American sitcom Grandfathered (2015-16).

In 2017, Saget featured in the stand-up comedy special Bob Saget: Zero to Sixty.
From 1989 to 1997, Saget hosted the American show titled âAmericaâs Funniest Home Videos.â Although Bob quit the show in 1997, he returned to co-host the show in 2009 for the 20th-anniversary one-hour special with Tom Bergeron.

Based on the life of his sister Gay Saget, Bob directed a film in 1996 titled âFor Hopeâ which was broadcasted on ABC television.
In 1998, he directed the feature film âDirty Work.â The film was released a year after Bob quit his show âAmericaâs Funniest Home Videos.â It starred Norm Macdonald and Artie Lange in the lead roles. The film was flopped at the box office and earned negative reviews from the audience and the critics alike. However, later, it became a cult favorite after Artie Langeâs popularity on The Howard Stern Show.
Saget had also featured in the music video of the song âRollin with Saget.â The song was sung by Jamie Kennedy and Stuart Stone and its video was released on the MTV series Blowinâ Up. It was about a night out with Bob and showcased his raunchy behavior. Later, Saget used it as a pseudo-theme song on his stand-up tours and website.
Saget also gave the narration for the popular American TV show âHow I Met Your Motherâ as Ted Mosby from 2005 to 2014.
In 2014, Bob released his book Dirty Daddy. The book is about his career, experiences, comedy influences, and his take on life.
Bob then conducted a standup special Bob Saget Live: The Dirty Daddy Tour in almost all the major cities of Australia including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth.
Thereafter he launched a podcast Bob Sagetâs Here for You for Studio71 in 2020.

Initially, Saget desired to become a doctor, however, his Honors English teacher, Elaine Zimmerman, motivated him to pursue a career in films.
After the demise of his sister Gay Saget due to Scleroderma in 1993, Bob joined the Scleroderma Research Foundation (SRF) to help the persons suffering from the disease. He was appointed as one of its board members in 2003 and was since then serving the organizationâs board. After Bob passed away on 9 January 2022, his fans honored him by sending various donations for Bobâs favorite charity Scleroderma Research Foundation (SRF). The Foundation received donations from more than 1500 people totaling more than $90,000 from across the world (as stated by the executive director of the Scleroderma Research Foundation on January 13). Besides that, the foundation also received a special grant of $1.5 million from one of its board members in memory of Saget.
On January 31, 2022, The Comedy Store hosted a tribute event for Bob Saget. The event was conducted at the same place where Bob started his career as a comedian 40 years ago. His wife, Kelly Rizzo , was also invited to the event who shared her fond memories with her husband and paid a tribute to him. Kelly took to her Instagram account and shared a few pictures from the show. She wrote,
So remember when I said youâll never see me do standup?? Well, I guess I got a couple of jokes in but paying tribute to my legendary and incredible husband on stage at @thecomedystore where his career began over 40 years ago was the honor of my life.â
On December 6, 2021, a month prior to his death, Saget filmed for an interview with CBS Mornings which turned out to be his last interview. In the interview, he talked about his sister Gay Saget and how his family lost her in 1993 due to scleroderma, a connective tissue disorder. He also mentioned the healing power of comedy and shared that his family was able to move on just because of comedy. He said,
We were all in the room when she let out her last breath, and I donât know how to explain it, and Iâm going to go woo here, it felt like the soul going past us, literally felt my hair kinda move. You know being an actor, thatâs a very important thing if your hair gets out of place.â
CBS aired the interview on January 14, 2022, five days after Bobâs demise.
Bob was a social drinker and used to consume alcohol on many occasions.
Bob often used to smoke cigars with his friends.
Saget was good friends with the American actress Dana Delany, Canadian actress Alan Thicke, and American actor Daniel Morton.

Saget was morbidly obese in childhood and remained so until the age of 22. He shed a lot of weight after he was operated on for a gangrenous appendix. The appendix was taken out at the UCLA Medical Center. Talking about it in an interview, Bob said,
I was a cocky, overweight twenty-two-year-old. Then I had a gangrenous appendix taken out, almost died, and I got over being cocky or overweight.â
Bob Saget was gifted the pot pipe of Rodney Dangerfield by Rodneyâs widow Joan Dangerfield after his (Rodneyâs) death.
Although the role of âDanny Tannerâ in Full House made Bob Saget a big star, Bob had some regrets about doing the role. In an interview, talking about it, Bob said,
I was working 80 hours a week between âFull Houseâ and âAmericaâs Funniest Home Videos.â I was going nuts. I felt like I was funny but didnât feel funny on the shows. But then I just went, âShut up. Itâs like the giving tree. Youâre lucky, and this is a good job.â
In 2014, Saget was nominated for the Grammy Award for âBest Comedy Albumâ for his record âThatâs What Iâm Talkinâ About.â
As per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Bob was a patient of PFTSD (Post Family-TV Stress Disorder).
After Bob Saget passed away in 2022, it was speculated that he had predicted his death exactly as it happened. A clip went viral on the internet in which Bob was seen saying that he wonât live long and he would be found dead lying in the bed. However, later, it was found that the clip was from his October 2021 podcast, where he was making a silly joke to his wife.
