Billy Crudup is an American actor who is known for appearing in leading and supporting roles in films including Almost Famous (2000), Big Fish (2003), Mission: Impossible III (2006), Watchmen (2009), Public Enemies (2009), The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015), Jackie (2016), and Alien: Covenant (2017).
When he was a child, his parents went through a divorce. However, they later remarried, only to divorce again later.
In an interview, he talked about his father who passed away in 2005 and said that his father was an âincessant gambler and hustler salesmanâ who had a persistent desire to âhit the jackpotâ throughout his life. In the interview, he further said that his grandfather fought in World War II and thought the most loving thing he could do was toughen up his son by telling him he was not good enough. That created a feature in his father that he was never going to be good enough.
When he was eight years old, he left New York with his family and located to Texas. They later moved again to Florida.

During his school years, he used to get roles in school pageants. He used to do funny impersonations to entertain his family and friends.
Crudup was a member of the Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity.
While he was pursuing an undergraduate acting course at LAB! Theatre, he played âSchroederâ in the childrenâs musical âYouâre A Good Man Charlie Brown!.â
He appeared in the films Inventing the Abbotts (1997) and Without Limits (1998), where he played the role of Olympian Steve Prefontaine.

In 1999, he appeared in the English release of the animated film Princess Mononoke in which he starred as Ashitaka.
In 2000, he was offered the role of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho but he turned it down.
In 2000, the film âAlmost Famousâ received an Academy Award in which he played the role of a rock guitarist. He was the second choice for the film because the first choice was Brad Pitt , who decided to appear in the film Fight Club (1999).

Wherever he went, there was never going to be a problem because he was there, because the world had not told him about complexities and failures. He had had nothing but the thrill of his own imagination in real time. There was the pro poker player who would âtalk to you constantly to get information, doing social calculus and poker calculus at the same time. Thatâs how you see Cory do a sideways glance in the middle of something, checking to see if thereâs any information he needs to get to add to his ever-changing algorithm.â

In 2002, he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in The Elephant Man.
In 2003, he declined the offer to play Bruce Banner in the film Hulk.

He used to work as a voice-over actor to reach a wide audience through advertising and promotional campaigns. He was the voice of MasterCardâs ad campaign. He used to say the word âPriceless.â He repeated that line for seven years.
He did the 1996 Broadway âBus Stopâ where he met his longtime girlfriend, Mary-Louise Parker. They broke up in 2004. When his ex-wife Mary-Louise Parker was seven months pregnant with their son, Crudup ended his relationship with her and started dating actress Claire Danes. After Claire started dating Crudup, she faced a lot of criticism for being a homewrecker. In an interview, Claire talked about her relationship with him and said that she was just 24 years old at that time and was madly in love.

In 2023, Billy Crudup and Terry Crews found out that they were distant cousins. They shared a common ancestor. On the set of the PBS show Finding Your Roots they found out that 15% of Crewsâ ancestors from the past five centuries were from Scotland, Ireland, and England, where Crudupâs family was from.
In an interview, he said that at one point in his career, he worked as a historical interpreter at Roanoke Island Festival Park located in Manteo, North Carolina. As a historical interpreter, Crudup would have engaged with visitors by providing information, demonstrations, and reenactments related to the historical significance of the park.
