When Beverly Aikins was 19 years old, she gave birth to her first child, Lindsay, in 1979 from her first marriage.
After five years, her second child, J. D. Vance (Lindsay’s half-brother), was born.
Her children grew up in Middletown, Ohio, and were protective of each other.

When J. D. Vance was six years old, she divorced her husband, Donald, who had left the family a few years earlier.
Beverly Aikins told Vance about the divorce and said that he would never see his father again.
After divorcing, she married a third man named Bob Hamel.
Bob Hamel adopted her son, and his name was changed from James Donald Bowman to James David Hamel.
Vance once joked in a media conversation that any name starting with D was fine, as long as it was not Donald (his biological father’s name).
Beverly Aikins worked as a nurse and had access to prescription drugs at her job.
Reportedly, her drug use got worse, and she started using heroin.
