Ben was born into a sports enthusiast family; as his father was a referee in the English Premier League (EPL) in the 1990s.
His father motivated him to play cricket and football. He even used to throw balls during Ben’s net-practice.
He started playing professional cricket quite late; as he made his domestic debut for Essex at the age of 17 against Sri Lanka in 2011.

He was England’s leading run-scorer at the 2012 U-19 World Cup.
At the age of 21, during his cricketing days at Essex, he was getting frustrated due to lack of opportunities, after which, he moved to nearby Surrey, which proved to be the right move for him; as he excelled over there both as a batsman and as a wicket-keeper.

He hit the headlines in September 2017, a year before he made his Test debut for England when he was named in England’s Test squad for the 2017–18 Ashes Series.
He made his Test debut as a replacement for the injured Jonny Bairstow , and he grabbed this opportunity with both hands; as he went on to score his first Test century on his debut against Sri Lanka in their home turf.
When he was called to be the part of England’s Test squad for Sri Lanka tour, he was not fully prepared; as he was spending his holidays in Lisbon and was also planning a winter off at that time.
