B.R. Chaya grew up in ITI quarters in Bangalore.

In her childhood, she started her training in music under her grandfather Krishna Rao and grandmother Bhagirathamma. Her grandfather was the harmonium player and music director of the famous GUBBI Drama Company.
She then started her training in Carnatic music under her gurus Jaganmatha and Vijayavani. She has cleared the senior examination in Carnatic classical music.

While she was studying in school, she used to participate in various extracurricular activities.
At the age of 6, she did her training in Bharatanatyam.

After completing her higher studies, she worked at HMT Watch Company for a few years.
She has represented Karnataka in the Doordarshan National Competition held in Chennai.
In March 1979, she participated in the Tabla competition along with Carnatic classical singer Geeta Chandrashekar, Dr. Rajkumar, SPB, and Susheela.

She has lent her voice to the songs of various films like Nee Thanda Kanike (1985), Huli Hebbuli (1987), Devatha Manushya (1988), Yuddha Kaanda (1989), and Undu Hoda Kondu Hoda (1992).
She considered the Indian singer Asha Bhosle her idol.

In 2015, she appeared as a judge in the TV show ‘Talented Kid Singers’ along with singer S.P. Baalu.
She considers music director Swara Samrat Vijayabhaskar her guru.
She enjoys playing various musical instruments like Sitar.

B.R. Chaaya has sung over 300 films and 15000 non-film songs including patriotic songs, Kannada Bhavageethe, Janapada Geete, nursery rhymes, and numerous devotional songs in various languages.
She follows the teachings of the Indian spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar .

She has also judged various television shows including ‘Haadigondu Haadu,’ ‘Nanna Haadu Nannadu,’ ‘Endoo Mareyada Haadu,’ ‘Guna Gaana,’ and ‘Music Therapy.’
BR Chaya is one of the youngest singers to receive an ‘A’ grade in All India Radio and Doordarshan.
She has lent her voice to more than 1000 TV and radio jingles.
She has performed in India and abroad along with her ‘B.R. Chaya and Party’ music group.
She is very fond of animals and she has a pet dog. She often shares pictures of it on her social media accounts.
