Awadesh Prasad became politically active at the age of 21.
He has served as the Ayodhya district co-convener of the anti-Emergency Sangarsh Samiti.
During the 1977 Indian General Elections, he worked as a polling agent of the Lok Dal at Amethi Constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
In 1992, soon after the formation of the Samajwadi Party, he became the national secretary and a member of the central parliamentary board of the party.
