Attakathi Dinesh was born in a middle-class family in Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
He is a versatile actor in Tamil cinema. He started his professional acting career in 2001 by doing theatre in Tamil, English, and French. Attakhathi is known for his natural acting and comic timing in films.
In an interview, he once revealed that he struggled a lot to get a break in the Tamil film industry, as there is no one from his family in the film industry.
Before getting a mainstream break in Tamil cinema, in 2006, he bagged some small roles in Tamil TV serials and films from 2006 to 2012.
He once admitted that, after not receiving satisfactory work in films and TV, he decided to quit acting. However, later, he bagged good roles and became one of the versatile actors in the Tamil film industry.
In 2012, he bagged a significant breakthrough with the film Attakathi (2012). His natural performance and excellent comic timing were greatly appreciated by the audience. From this role, he earned the nickname Attakathi Dinesh. He has received awards and nominations for his performance in this film.
Attakathi Dinesh shares a close relationship with film director Pa. Ranjith . Pa. Ranjith was also the director of his award-winning films Attakathi (2012) and Kabali (2016).
Some of his popular films are Cuckoo (2014), Oru Naal Koothu (2016), Ulkuthu (2017), Annanukku Jai (2018), Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu (2019), Naanum Single Thaan (2021), and Pallu Padama Paathukka (2023).
His film Tamizhuku En Ondrai Azhuthavum (2015) premiered in the Orrizonti (Horizons) section of the 72nd Venice Film Festival (2015), where it won the Amnesty International Italia Award under the title “Cinema for Human Rights”.

Attakathi Dinesh admires Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth for their acting skills. His acting style was also compared with Kamal Haasan, and he was also called the next Kamal Haasan of the South Film Industry.
