Ashok Vaswani is an Indian banker who was appointed as the MD and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank for a term of three years on 1 January 2024. During his career, Vaswani has had notable roles as a retail banker at global financial institutions.
In his early years in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Vaswani aspired to become a spin bowler. However, he lost his father at a young age. Although his mother hoped he would pursue medicine, Vaswani opted for a career in finance.
Once, in a media conversation, Ashok Vaswani shared his journey of working in different countries. He said,
I left India with $14 in my pocket and could have never dreamed of working in so many countries. I took my first flight when I was 21, and I didn’t think my career would permit me to travel and meet so many people.”

He is a chartered accountant (CA) and company secretary (CS) with licenses from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
From 1985 to 1987, Ashok Vaswani worked as a Management Consultant at AF Ferguson Enterprises, Virginia United States.
He joined Citi Group as a Division Executive in Turkey, the Middle East and Africa in June 1999 and worked there till November 2000. He was responsible for building and overseeing various country and regional businesses across different areas. In November 2000, he was appointed as a Marketing Director at its CEMEA branch. Ashok Vaswani has served as the CEO at Citigroup Asia Pacific and was a Member of the Citigroup Global Operating and Management Committees.
In June 2007, Ashok Vaswani started working as a partner at Brysam Global Partners in New York and worked there till February 2010.
In April 2012, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Retail Committee at the British Bankers’ Association and worked there till November 2013.

He has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank, UK, where he demonstrated expertise in building and expanding global businesses, leading successful teams, forming impactful partnerships, utilizing innovative technology, and delivering substantial bottom-line growth with a strong business vision.
In June 2021, he began working as a non-executive director at LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group). In July 2022, he was appointed as the president of Pagaya Technologies Limited, a U.S.-Israeli AI company.

In November 2023, the Board of Directors of Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited appointed Ashok Vaswani as a Director, Managing Director, CEO, and key managerial personnel of the bank for a three-year term starting from 1 January 2023. The RBI had previously approved Vaswani’s appointment as the MD & CEO of the bank. Before joining Kotak Mahindra Bank, Ashok Vaswani worked for more than three decades in the banking sector.
