Ashok Raj Sigdel grew up in a middle-class family.
His father, Bishwaraj Sigdel, first lived in Tanahun before relocating to Taulihawa and then Bhairahawa in Nepal.
Ashok pursued his schooling in Kathmandu under the care of his maternal uncle. During this time, he also made a mark as a national-level boxer, Taekwondo athlete, and table tennis player.
In 1986, he joined the Nepali Army and secured the top rank in the 25th Basic Course. He was later commissioned as a cadet.
Over the years, he held several key positions, including Commandant of the Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Brigade and Division Commander, Military Assistant to the Chief of Army Staff, and Director of Military Operations.
