He belongs to a family of landlords in Uttar Pradesh.

Ashish serves as the chairman of the āFood items adulteration and to combat the health problems of public life in the circulation of counterfeit drugsā committee.
His father-in-law, Dr. Soney Lal Patel, was the founder of the Apna Dal and died on 18 October 2009. After his death, his wife, Krishna Patel, became the president of Apna Dal.
At the beginning of his career, Ashish joined the Military Engineering Services after graduation. Later, he started working in the UP Jal Nigam as an engineer.
Ashish entered politics in 2017 after taking a voluntary retirement from his job.
In 2017, after the president and founding member of Apna Dal (Soneylal), Jawahar Lal Patel, left his post because of ill health, Ashish became the national president of the party.
In 2018, Ashish claimed that their alliance party, BJP, isnāt giving them the respect they deserve. Expressing his anger, Ashish asked the BJP to learn from their recent losses and said,
State BJP leadership isnāt giving us the respect we deserve. They should learn from recent losses. The SP-BSP alliance is a challenge for us. Allies in Uttar Pradesh are upset. Leadership at the centre must do something, else NDA (National Democratic Alliance) would suffer in the state.ā
Ashishās wife, Anupriya Patel, became the national president of Apna Dal (Soneylal) in 2019. She also holds the position of the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Ashish met with an accident and suffered minor injuries on 27 December 2023 when his car collided with another one of his fleet while he was travelling to Mirzapur from Punjab. The accident occurred because a motorcyclist suddenly appeared in front of his car and his car driver tried to protect him from getting hit.
