On 18 November 2022, he took voluntary retirement from the position of Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries. He was supposed to get retired on 31 December 2022. As per the order of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Kamran Rizvi replaced him.
On 19 November 2022, the President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed him as the Election Commissioner of India. The post of one Election Commissioner in the three-member committee was vacant since 15 May 2022. As per the statement of the Union Law and Justice Ministry,
The President is pleased to appoint Shri Arun Goel, IAS (Retd.) (PB: 1985) as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the date he assumes the office.”
