In childhood, she used to imitate people around her.
While she was in school and college, she participated in various sports. She used to be a tomboy during those days.
After graduating, she wanted to become a model. She then moved to Mumbai to try her luck in modelling.

In Mumbai, she started living in a YWC hostel. She then met a few people including Prahlad Kakkar who helped her to start her modelling career.
Initially, her father used to send her Rs 1000 every month for her survival in Mumbai.
Her first ad was for Johnson & Johnson. After appearing in a few TV commercials, she started getting offers of films.

In 1986, she acted in the Hindi TV movie ‘Shingora.’
She came into the limelight with the Hindi film ‘Jalwa’ (1987) starring Om Puri .

Archana then met the Indian actor Parmeet Sethi at her friend’s house. At that time, Archana was a divorcee and Parmeet had a break-up. They both were not interested in starting a relationship. So, they remain friends for a few months. Later, they started developing feelings for each other and started a live-in relationship. She is a few years older than Parmeet.
She has acted in many Hindi films like ‘Agneepath’ (1990), ‘Raja Hindustani’ (1996), ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998), ‘Mohabbatein’ (2000), ‘Krrish’ (2006), and ‘Bol Bachchan’ (2012).
