While she was in school, she participated in various extra-curricular activities.

In childhood, she was inclined towards singing. At the age of 6, she started her formal training in Hindustani classical music and Carnatic music under Anuradha Sriram. Later, she did her training in Hindustani music under Pandit Manikbua Thakurdas.

She is also trained in Western classical opera music.
In 1980, she worked as a child actor in the Tamil film āKaaliā starring the Indian actor Rajnikanth .
While she was in class 12, she performed in various radio and TV programs.
She has also performed in various events in India and other countries.
In graduation and post-graduation, she received a gold medal.
While she was studying at Wesleyan University, she met Sriram Parasuram. Initially, they became friends, and later, they fell in love with each other.
