Some Lesser Known Facts About Anura Kumara Dissanayake
Since school, Dissanayake has been active in politics with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party.
Dissanayake considers Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin as his political idols.
While studying at the Thambuttegama Central College, Dissanayake was the first student to be chosen for admission into the university.
Just after three months of joining Peradeniya University, Dissanayake left the university due to threats.
Dissanayake is an ardent believer of Neo-Marxism.
Dissanayake was involved in the JVP insurrection between 1987 and 89 against the “imperialist and capitalist” regime of then-Presidents Jayawardene and R Premadasa.
In 1988, One of Dissanayake’s cousins was killed in the JVP insurrection during the government’s crackdown. His family home was also destroyed in the crackdown.
Dissanayake became the National Organizer of the Socialist Students Association in 1995.
As the JVP broke its alliance with the United People’s Freedom Alliance in 2005, Dissanayake resigned from his portfolio of Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation on 16 June 2005 along with other party ministers.
Dissanayake ran for the presidential post for the first time in 2019. He received 418,553 votes and came third with 3% of valid votes.
Dissanayake took oath as Sri Lanka’s 10th President on 23 September 2024. He received 5,740,179 votes, followed by Ranasinghe Premadasa with 4,530,902. He also became the first leftist president to head the Sri Lankan government.
