Antara Mitra was born and brought up in a middle-class Bengali family in Maslandapur, West Bengal.

She started practising singing with her father at a very young age.

In 2006, Antara Mitra left her medical entrance exam and came to Mumbai from Kolkata to audition for Indian Idol Season 2. She got selected and gained immense popularity with the show.
After being eliminated from Indian Idol season 2, the Indian musician Anu Malik offered her to work as a folk singer.
At the age of 18, she participated as a contestant in a National TV show.
