She was born and brought up in a middle-class family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

She started Carnatic music training at the age of four. While she was studying in school, she participated in various singing competitions.

She did her training in piano at Trinity College, London.
While she was studying Mass Communication, she received a call from Mumbai to work as a singer. After two weeks, she left the course and shifted to Mumbai.
From 1991 to 1992, she worked as a part-time copywriter at the Madras Advertising Company.
Annupamaa, along with the Indian music director A. R. Rahman , lent her voice in various TV advertisements like Medimix soap, Ponds Dreamflower Talc, AVT Deepika Coconut Oil, Tatia Resorts, and Aavin Goodness Ice Cream.
In 1993, she lent her voice to the Tamil song âJuly Maddham Vanthalâ written by A. R. Rahman, which became very popular. However, she came into the limelight with the song âChandralekhaâ from the 1993 Tamil film Thiruda Thiruda.
As a singer, some of her Tamil films are Sandhippoma, Majunu, Boys, Kadhal Desam, Bombay, Kannathil Muthamittal, and Thimiru.
As an additional singer, she has sung a few songs like âDil Se Reâ and Break The Rules (Maro Maro).
Some of her popular Hindi songs are Jaane Tu⌠Ya Jaane Na, Pappu Canât Dance, and Nazrein Milaana.
She has lent her voice to songs in various languages like Hindi, English, and Malayalam.
On 26 June 2010, she appeared in the reality TV show âSangeetha Mahayuddham.â
In 2013, she walked the ramp in Jupiter events.

In June 2013, Annupamaa was selected to perform at China Radio International. Later, her song âKonjam Nilavuâ was selected for the first China South Asia Expo held in Kunming China. She was selected as the first playback singer from India in this program.
Annupamaa sang âA Whole New Worldâ song for the Tamil and Telugu dubbed animated film âAladdin.â
She has composed music for jingles of various brands like TVS, MKV, Vivel, and Indian Oil.
She works for the NGO âWe for WEâ based in Jalandhar which works for womenâs empowerment in more than 18 countries. She has also composed and sung a song called Shaan Se Jee based on womenâs empowerment. In 2014, she was appointed as the ambassador and team leader for the NGO.

She has judged one of the seasons of the singing reality TV show âTop Star Singer.â
She did her training in acting at a theatre production company in Chennai. She has lent her voice to many poems in various theatre plays.
She is an avid animal lover and owns a pet dog named Cocoa. She often shares pictures with her pet dog on her social media accounts. She even started the âWater Bowl Challengeâ to help animals and birds by providing water to them during the summer.
