| Controversies | • Banned for showing dissent In November 2024 during Maharashtra's Group A match against Services, controversy erupted after Ankit was given out by the umpire. Ankit was not satisfied with the umpire's decision and refused to leave the pitch which delayed the ongoing match for 15 minutes. With no Decision Review System (DRS) available as the match was livestreamed rather than televised, Bawne was unable to challenge the umpire’s decision. Finally, after match referee Amit Sharma and Maharashtra coach Sulakshan Kulkarni's intervention, the match resumed. He was set to lead the India U19 team in a four-nation tournament that year and the 2012 Under-19 Cricket World Cup before being dropped. Ankit in his defence said that the confusion happened because the agent who made his passport messed up the date. Ankit made his first-class debut in 2007 against Karnataka.
Ankit is the youngest player to score a century for Maharashtra at the age of 16. He also scored back-to-back centuries against Karnataka and Delhi when he was 16.

During the 2013-14 season, Ankit helped the Maharashtra team reach the Ranji final as he scored 731 runs at an average of 66.45 in that season; it was the first time Maharashtra reached the finals of the Ranji Trophy tournament since 1992–93.

Ankit made the headlines in 2016 when he put on a massive 594-run partnership in the Ranji Trophy along with Swapnil Gugale to break a 70-year-old record. It was the second-highest partnership in first-class cricket and the highest partnership in the Ranji Trophy tournament’s history.
