Merkel has a polish ancestry from her paternal Grandfather, Ludwig Kasner, a German national of Polish origin from Posen (now Poznań). The family’s original Polish name Kaźmierczak migrated to Kasner, Germany in 1930.
Religion has played a crucial role in Merkel’s life. Her father was born Catholic but her family eventually converted to Lutheranism and she studied Lutheran theology in Heidelberg and afterwards in Hamburg.
At her school days, she learned to speak Russian fluently and got many prizes for her proficiency in Russian and Mathematics.
In 1989, she came into Politics. Merkel got involved in the growing democracy movement after the fall of the Berlin Wall, joining the new party Democratic Awakening.
