Some Lesser Known Facts About Amit Panghal
Amit Panghal is an Indian amateur boxer who became the first Indian man to win a silver medal in World Championships in 2019.
He grew up in a financially weak family in Mayna village, Rohtak.
When Amit was in his teenage, his brother, Ajay Phangal, motivated him to make a career in boxing. Ajay himself is a former boxer.
Amitâs family was not financially sound and could afford to train only one child for boxing. Therefore, his brother, gave up his boxing career to allow Amit to pursue it.
Amit began his boxing career in 2017 with the National Boxing Championships in which he bagged a gold medal.
He shot to fame after winning a bronze in the Asian Boxing Championships (light flyweight category) in Tashkent in 2017.

The bronze medal in the Asian Boxing Championships allowed him to participate in the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Panghal was beaten in the quarterfinals by Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan in the championship.
After facing a defeat in the World Boxing Championship, Amit came back stronger and went on to win a silver medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
He then won a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games by defeating Rio Olympic medalist Dusmatov (the same opponent from whom he got defeated in the World Championships a year before).

In the same year, he took part in the Strandzha Cup in Sofia and won a gold medal.

In 2019, Panghal had to change his weight category from 49 to 52 Kg as the 49 Kg weight category was discontinued from the Olympics.
Even after changing his weight category, Amit won a gold medal in the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok.
In 2019, he became the first Indian male boxer to win a silver medal in the World Boxing Championships.

In 2020, Amit defeated Carlo Paalam from the Philippines in the 52 kg quarterfinal and qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In the same year, he won a gold medal in the Boxing World Cup in Germany.
In addition to boxing, Amit has been serving in the Indian Army as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) since 2018. He is presently in the 22nd Battalion of The Mahar Regiment (as of 2021).

Panghal is very close to his niece Mehak and considers her his lucky charm.

Amit believes that technology helps sportspersons to understand their opponent well. In an interview, while sharing how he and his team studied Bibonssinov (Kazakhstanâs boxing player) through video footage, Panghal said,
Technology has evolved so much. Earlier we had no clue on how our opponents and their strengths and weaknesses. But video clippings have helped not only us but athletes from different sports to get things right before matches. It is a great thing.â
Panghal is an admirer of PM Narendra Modi . Talking about him in an interview, he said,
Wo desh ke liye itna karte hai, hum chota sa wish toh kar hi sakte hai (he does some much for India, we can at least do this much for him). I have always admired PM Modi for his will to work relentlessly for the country and I wish him all the best for the future. May he have a healthy and prosperous life. Jai Hind.â

Panghal is very close to his brother, Ajay, and believes that he was the âbest coach.â Talking about Ajay in an interview, Amit said,
My elder brother Ajay deserves a lot of credit. Heâs actually the best coach for me. He always derives strategies for me. And I make sure I speak to him before every match.â
Panghal desires to open a âPanghal Foundationâ someday for helping the budding boxers.
He is a part of the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) started by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
In one of his interviews, Amit shared the details of his training sessions. He said,
I train for close to five hours spread across two sessions in the morning and evening, all of it being indoor. I stretch for 30 minutes, jog and warm-up, then do pads, punching bag, and finally abdominal exercises and relaxation.â
