Amit Kshatriya was born in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and raised in Katy, Texas, USA.
He is the son of immigrant parents who migrated to the USA from India. His parents were first-generation Indian immigrants to the USA.
His father is an engineer, and his mother is a chemist, so he developed a keen interest in science and technology from a very young age.
In 2003, after completing his studies, Amit started his professional career at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a software engineer and served as an instructor for the space station robotics system responsible for training multiple space shuttle and station crews.
In December 2010, after completing training for the robotics flight control position, Kshatriya became a robotic engineer and served as the lead robotics officer for SpaceX’s Dragon demonstration mission. He was responsible for planning and executing the first International Space Station (ISS) robotic capture of a commercial vehicle.
In early 2013, Kshatriya became the Chief Training Officer (CTO), a position responsible for the overall integrated training of the flight control team and specifically served as the lead CTO for the fourth Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle mission in August 2013.
In the early years of his career, he made notable contributions to robotic assembly operations for the International Space Station (ISS). His strong technical foundation and analytical skills quickly made him recognized at the NASA office.
Soon, Kshatriya became a core member of NASA’s top deep space programs team.
From 2014 to 2017, Amit was appointed as a space station flight director, where he guided global teams of NASA in the operations and execution of the space station during all phases of flight.
During this time, he was one of only about 100 individuals in history to serve as a flight director for the ISSÂ since its establishment in 1965.
In 2017, he became deputy in charge and then deputy manager of the International Space Station (ISS) Vehicle Office, where he oversaw program planning and execution for Artemis and was responsible for sustaining engineering, logistics, and hardware program management.
In January 2021, he was moved to NASA Headquarters in Washington, where he was appointed as the acting deputy associate administrator for the Common Exploration Systems Development Division (CESDD). His role was to direct and provide leadership and integration for the Space Launch System, Orion, and Exploration Ground Systems Programs, as well as associated Artemis Campaign Development Division (ACDD) initiatives, which are linked to NASA’s Moon to Mars program.
In late 2021, Amit was appointed an assistant deputy associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD), where he was an integral part of the team that returned a spacecraft designed to carry humans to the Moon during the Artemis I mission.

In 2023, Amit became the deputy associate administrator for the Moon to Mars program in ESDMD, where he was the main person in charge of managing risks and making sure all parts of the program worked together smoothly.
On 3 September 2025, Amit Kshatriya was named the associate administrator of NASA, where he serves as the highest-ranking civil servant at NASA and as a senior advisor to NASA Administrator Sean Duffy .
As an associate administrator of NASA, Kshatriya will oversee the 10 center directors and the associate administrators of the mission directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Additionally, he serves as the agency’s chief operating officer.
