At the beginning of his career, he started working as a theatre artist and has performed in a few Gujarati theatre plays like Chaal Reverse Ma, Jaiye Parke Paise, and Leela Laher.
Amit has acted in a few Hindi TV serials such as ‘CID’ (1998), ‘Khichdi’ (2003; Star Plus) and ‘F.I.R.’ (2006; Sony SAB).

In 2008, he appeared in the popular Hindi sitcom ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ which aired on Sony SAB. He once shared that initially, he auditioned for some other role in the serial. He said that for his role, he had to shave his head completely for every alternate day. However, within a few weeks, he started getting an infection on his head after which Amit and the makers of the TV serial decided to use a Gandhi topi for his character.
