Some Lesser Known Facts About Ali Khan

  • Ali Khan is a Pakistan-origin American cricketer who rose to prominence because of his exceptional performances in domestic leagues across the world. He possesses pace and raw strength and can consistently bowl above the 140kph mark.

  • During his childhood in Pakistan, Ali Khan used to play cricket with his elder brother at home. When there would be no one to play with, Khan used to bowl against the wall. As a kid, he only wanted to bowl fast.

  • He used to idolise legendary fast bowlers like Shoaib Akhtar , Wasim Akram , Waqar Younis, andĀ Brett Lee .

  • While he was in hisĀ early adolescence, one day his elder brother took him to play a tape-ball cricket match. In that match, he took six wickets playing against boys older than him. It was then that he realised his potential as a fast-bowler. Like almost every other Pakistani cricketer, Ali Khan grew up playing tape-ball cricket in Pakistan.

  • In 2010, Ali Khan was 19 years old when he along with his family moved to the USA. Back then, he had given up the idea of pursuing cricket as a career as he never thought there would be cricket in America. But destiny had other ideas in the store for him. One day, his uncle took him along to play in a local club match in Dayton, Ohio, where Ali’s sheer pace and accuracy left everyone awestruck. That game made Ali re-emerge as a cricketer.

  • Ali played in the local club matches in his first few years in the USA while simultaneously working at a cellular company.

  • He got a big break in September 2015 after he was named in the ICC Americas 15-member squad (a combined team from the various nations in America) to play in theĀ NAGICO Regional Super50 tournament in West Indies. Eventually, in January 2016, he made his List A debut playing for ā€œICC Americasā€ team against Jamaica. He was the only member in his squad who had earlier not represented his national team.

  • Impressed by his solid performances with the ball,Ā Guyana Amazon Warriors signed him to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2016. He dismissed Kumar Sangakkara on the very first ball that he bowled on his CPL debut.

  • Ali Khan’s lean physique has at times found it difficult to cope with theĀ strain of fast bowling, illness and injuries have troubled himĀ a few times. In 2017, his CPL 2017 contract with the Guyana Amazon Warriors was terminated because of a hamstring injury. He was looked upon by the franchises as an injury-prone fast bowler.

  • With doubts raised about his fitness, Ali made a strong comeback in 2018 when he took part in the 2018 US Open T20 tournament in Florida. Dwayne Bravo who was playing in the same team was impressed with his bowling ability and suggested his name to the Winnipeg Hawks for the 2018 Global T20 Canada. The same year he also made a comeback in CPL after he was signed by Shahrukh Khan ā€˜s team, Trinbago Knight Riders.

  • Throughout his journey from playing tape-ball cricket in Pakistan to troubling international level cricketers, Ali Khan continued to weave his magic on big stages. In 2019, he bowled a double-wicket maiden over in a 10 overs match.

  • After collecting vast experience in franchise cricket, he made his ODI debut for the USA on 27 April 2019 in the ICC Cricket League Division 2. This was a crucial match for the USA Cricket Team, a win would confirm USA’s ODI status. Ali Khan produced a great spell of 5/46 and helped his team to victory.

  • Khan dreamt of playing in the Indian Premier League one day. He had earlier registered his name in the 2019 and 2020 editions of the IPL auction; however, he was not picked by any franchise. Eventually, inĀ September 2020, his dream of playing in the IPL turned into reality when KKR signed him as a replacement for England fast-bowler, Harry Gurney, who opted out of IPL 2020 owing to a shoulder injury.
