Some Lesser Known Facts About Akshay Karnewar

  • Akshay Karnewar is a domestic-level cricketer who represents Vidarbha in first-class and List-A matches. He gained prominence with his performance on 8 November 2021 in the 2021-22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy when he bowled his quota of four overs without conceding any run and took two wickets, hence becoming the first T20 bowler ever to accomplish this feat.

  • Vidarbha was batting first. With the help of Jitesh Sharma and Apoorv Wankhade knocks, they gave Manipur the target of 223 runs in the allotted 20-overs. In reply, Manipur was never looking in line with the target and got all out for 55 runs in less than 17 overs. Akshay was taken off the attack after bowling three consecutive maidens. He has taken two wickets in the first two overs but no one knew the impending world record. The spinner then bowled six dot balls to script the world record.

  • Speaking to the media after entering the record books, Akshay remarked,

ā€œIt’s unbelievable. Not conceding even a single run in the entire match is something extraordinary and I am really feeling good.ā€

Former Vidarbha coach Sulakshan Kulkarni hailed Akshay’s effort by saying,

ā€œHe is a big performance player. He showed his mettle with the bat in Vidarbha’s second Ranji final. Then, scored 100 in Irani Trophy and now recorded another big performance.ā€

  • Adding ice to the cake, he took hattrick the next day against Sikkim after that historic feat in the last two balls of the eighth and first ball of the tenth over respectively. Vidarbha posted 205 runs on the board. Sikkim on the other hand could only manage 75 runs. He finished his spell while conceding five runs and taking four wickets. Interestingly, out of those four wickets two were caught & bowled while one was a hit wicket. The dismissed batters were Ajit Karthik, captain Kranthi Kumar, wicketkeeper Ashish Thapa, and Nilesh Lamichaney.

  • He started playing cricket at the age of six. When Akshay Karnewar was 13 years old, his coach noticed that Akshay (right-arm off-break bowler) was batting and throwing with his left hand. That’s when he advised him to go for a left-arm off-spin instead of a right-arm, but Karnewar ended up becoming an ambidextrous bowler. In an interview with a news channel, he told,

ā€œWhen I was 13, my coach Balu Navghare asked me if I can bowl with my left arm. Since then I have been using both my arms.ā€

    He further adds,

ā€œMy intent is always to pick up wickets. I first watch how the batsmen is playing and then decide if I have to really use both my arms to take his wicket. Sometimes, I don’t need to.ā€

    He also said,

ā€œI bowl normally off-spin. My coach told me to bowl with my left hand. Due to the lack of a left-arm spinner in the team, I bowled a lot and was successful. But now I can bowl with both hands. Not only this, I can do many things with both hands.ā€

  • Soon, he went on to play the DY Patil T20 league in Mumbai. He also gave the trials for the Rajasthan Royals team of IPL but unfortunately couldn’t get selected.

He then finished as the leading wicket-taker for Vidarbha (16) in that tournament. This followed up with Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament where he took seven wickets in nine games.

  • His next debut match was a Twenty20 game against Gujarat on 3 January 2016 at the Vidarbha Cricket Stadium in Nagpur (Maharashtra). Gujarat was led by veteran Parthiv Patel and Vidarbha by Faiz Fazal. Gujarat batted first and put 174 runs on the board. Akshay Karnewar went wicketless and conceded 26 runs in two overs. Vidarbha on the other hand could only manage to score 114 runs.
