Some Lesser Known Facts About Axar Patel
Axar’s father also used to play cricket at the district level. His father and his grandmother always wanted Axar to become a cricketer although Axar never wanted to be a cricketer, instead, he wanted to be a mechanical engineer.

Axar was 13 years old when his father took him to the cricket coach Sanjaybhai – a BCCI-affiliated coach and a former secretary of the Kheda District Cricket Association. Initially, he was a pace bowler but Sanjaybhai advised him to bowl spin. In an interview, one of his childhood coach said,
In school tournaments, he would score runs and bowl at a good pace. But with time, Sanjaybhai realised that left-arm spin would suit him well. That’s how it started, and once he started getting wickets, everyone started taking note of his performances,”
When he was 15 years old, his friend Dhiren Kansara first noticed his cricketing talent and suggested him to play an inter-school tournament.

His first name’s spelling was “Akshar”, but because of his school principal’s mistake he spelt it as “Axar” in the school leaving certificate, and since then he has been using this name.
At 17, Axar was appointed the captain of Kheda district’s U-19 team. Shortly after being handed the captaincy, he did not turn up for training for three days. His coach Sanjaybhai was not happy with his behaviour and asked him to resign but Axar felt his mistake and offered an unconditional apology and did seven rounds of sprints as a punishment.
As he wasn’t strong enough at the beginning of his cricketing career, his father was a bit worried about how he was going to cope with the physical demands of the game. So, his father enrolled him in a gym.
He started playing cricket as a batsman, but later, became a bowler to increase his chance to play for India.
In 2010, he met with an accident just after he was selected for the Gujarat U-19 team. He injured his leg at home during the Diwali break, after which he was ruled out for the entire season. During this period, he thought of quitting cricket, but his grandmother’s will to see him playing on TV inspired him to make a comeback.
In his debut Ranji Trophy season of 2012, he played only one match, but he had an exceptional 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season as he was amongst the most consistent players for Gujarat as he made 369 runs at an average of 46.12 and took 29 wickets at an economy rate of 23.58 in 7 matches.
Axar took his first five-wicket haul in his second first-class match, against Delhi in November 2013; he took 6 wickets for 55 runs in the first innings and got the wickets of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag .
He didn’t get the chance to play even a single game in his debut IPL season (IPL-6, 2013), but did not get a game, but his success in the 2013 Ranji Trophy season earned him a spot in the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) squad. He had an exceptional season in his debut season with Kings XI Punjab (IPL-7, 2014) as he took 16 wickets at an economy rate of 6.22.

Axar played an important role and helped India’s U23 side win the 2013 ACC Emerging Teams Cup. He took seven wickets in the tournament, including a four-for in the semi-final against UAE.
On his Twenty20 International debut for India, Axar finished with the figures of 4-0-17-3 which earned him the Man of the Match award.
On 1 May 2016, Axar took the first and only hattrick of the IPL 2016 season in the match against the Gujarat Lions; he took four wickets in five balls in the match.

In December 2018, Axar was bought by the Delhi Capitals for Rs. 5 crore in the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League.

Axar took his first international test wicket of Joe Root in 2021.
Axar scored his maiden ODI half-century against West Indies on 25 July 2022; he scored 64 runs off 35 balls and remained unbeaten as he scored a match-winning six.

Ravichandran Ashwin replaced Axar Patel in the Indian squad that was announced for the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup. Patel got injured during the 2023 Asia Cup, so Ashwin stepped in for him. check sources India Today
Axar Patel was part of the Indian cricket team squad which won the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States. He was also awarded Player of the Match award in the semifinal match against England, making 10 runs and taking 3 wickets. In the finals, he scored 47 runs off 31 balls and also took a wicket at the economy rate of 12.33.

In August 2024, Axar Patel was selected to play in the Duleep Trophy by the BCCI before the test series with Bangladesh. He was chosen alongside Virat Kohli , Shubman Gill , KL Rahul , Ravindra Jadeja , Yashasvi Jaiswal , Suryakumar Yadav , Rohit Sharma , and Kuldeep Yadav .
